Born in Los Angeles in 1971, Andrew Rose spent a dozen years in New York, where he earned his B.A. in Art History from Vassar College and his dual-honors M.F.A./M.S. degrees in Painting and Art History from Pratt Institute. He lives above Honolulu in the Pu‘u Ohia rainforest where he maintains a studio practice when he is not out hiking or surfing.
A teaching artist since 1996, Andrew Rose has taught art and art history in California, New York, Spain, and Italy, and since 2006, he has served as Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at Island Pacific Academy as well as Instructor of Art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Rose’s award-winning artwork, curatorial efforts, and exhibitions at Nu‘uanu Gallery, Honolulu Academy of Arts, MoMA/PS1, Pratt Institute, Hunter College, and Fundación Valparaiso complement years spent curating, producing, and installing exhibitions for artists, galleries, and museums in Los Angeles, New York, and London. His most recent solo exhibition, LIMINAL, investigated understanding through paintings made from gouache, pastel, acrylic, and video.
In addition to being reviewed for his work in publications including Artweek, Honolulu Magazine, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and Honolulu Weekly, Andrew Rose has contributed reviews of art and culture to Honolulu Magazine and in the past has helped produce books and more for Bruce Weber, Pratt Institute, and others.
